‘BEFORE I TELL you what your punishment is, I want to know what it was the two of you were thinking, fighting in front of everybody like that.’ Captain Wells questions us the following evening, ‘You do realise that the two of you are being watched.’
How the hell does she know?
‘What do you mean we are being watched, Captain?’ I ask innocently.
‘I mean that General Thorn and Chancellor Cain have asked that the two of you should be watched. I have been told to report anything and everything back to them about your training, your behaviour, who you talk to—everything.’
‘I don’t understand, Captain, why are you telling us this?’ I ask.
‘Because,’ she replies, ‘I am trying to help the two of you survive here. You are both the top-ranking recruits, and I have had to lie and mark you down, to avoid suspicion from the other recruits and from the chancellor.’
I knew that she had noticed how much I was holding back during training. But why was she lying for me? And why was she lying for Ren?
‘Luka, you already have a target on your back because of your father; the others would think that you are only being ranked so high because of your father, not because you truly are that skilled. And Ren, the same goes for you, the others are suspicious about you and where you come from, I know that you do not want that getting out. I have had to lie about both of your rankings and provide false reports back to General Thorn. Neither of you realise how dangerous it is for you to be here. Neither of you realise what they would do to you if they knew the truth.’
‘We understand,’ I say. Ren is either too dumfounded to find his voice or he was truly afraid. Truth was, I didn’t really understand.
‘I truly hope that you do, the two of you need to keep your heads down from now on. I can only protect you so much.’
‘You don’t need to protect us; we can take care of ourselves,’ Ren grunts.
Wells glances over at Ren, and is silent for a long while before deciding to speak. ‘No, you can’t, not by yourselves. Get cleaning those guns; I will be back in on the hour to check on you. I suggest you get started and make it look like you take this punishment seriously.’ She doesn’t wait for our reply as she turns and walks from the training room, leaving me alone with Ren.
I walk over and sit down on one of the two stools that are provided. There is a pile of guns that we are required to dismantle, clean and put back together again. I begin dismantling the first gun, while Ren stands behind me frozen, watching. It seems as though he is planning to say something to me, but in the next moment, he comes and sits down on the other stool and picks up a gun.
We worked in silence for over half an hour.
